INTRODUCTION
Beside being a showcase, this site will function as an archive of sorts for most of the work I have done over the last 20 years. One might think that to be too much, however I intended to make the navigation easy enough for the viewer to make their own choices driven by their interest and time available. One can view the work from different angles in series according to four main themes - culture, nature, culture vs nature and people- or by project, exhbition, publication and work done for clients.
My work is set up in photographic series which not only stand on their own, but more often than not interact with eachother to add meaning because of its' juxtaposition. The style of photography of each series can differ greatly, since I let myself be led by what the topic of a particular series calls for. I compose my work two ways. The first I call organic: I start with one series, which lead me to produce another, which leads to another etc.etc. Each juxtaposition changes their meaning - good example of this way of working is Five White Males, Women Laughing and Dogs-. The meaning of these kind of juxtapositions are up to the the viewer. The second method is more systematic: I start with a concept for a project, mostly social and cultural in nature, which I than explore visually and intellectually as I progress. The projects 'Quest&Counting' and 'Entropy' are set up this way. The more time I spend with a project the more I comprehend about the ramifications of theme. They are still ongoing as a result.
This might make for what some might consider work with no specific style or specific photographic vision. This is exactly what I am after. Life seems that way to me. A wide variety of 'worlds' and 'patterns', as I call them, happily and not so happily coexist, whereby many interact and many just don't. At these crossroads 'things' happen, and I try to capture and portray just that, whereby I with my photographic series are just a channel.
CURRENT
At this moment I am working both ways. Here are the links to the two most recent series, 'GenModified?' and 'WiggedOut' and two more series are on the way. They all seem to involve 'hair' and 'stages' in one form or another. We will see where this will lead me.
Next to this organically evolving work I started a project at the end of 2009 about adolescent girls, both immigrant and native, with their mothers called 'Home?Sweet?16?'. It looks at their different worlds from their own perspective, juxtaposed and in dialogue with my photographic work and the current political, social and cultural opinions. This newsletter newsletter6.doc describes the project briefly. And this is the social network site I just started to collect all kinds of personal input by the girls and their mothers. It will be a source for this project next to my personal interactions with them. This project has started in The Netherlands, but the intention is to take this project to a European level.
